Saving offline documents for a travel day

On a travel day, the correct documents need to remain accessible without an internet connection. A saved picture is not a valid substitute for every ticket.

Use a format the provider actually accepts

Check how each ticket may be presented. An official PDF, a ticket stored in an app and a screenshot are not equivalent. DB explicitly distinguishes an online ticket issued as a PDF from a mobile-phone ticket. Do not therefore treat a screen capture as a universal backup for every product you purchase.

Download the files supplied by the provider and open them on the device. A booking confirmation may contain useful information without itself being the travel ticket. Find the document intended for inspection. When travelling with others, check that every required ticket is present and complete rather than assuming one attachment contains the entire party's documents.

Test access before leaving

Temporarily disconnect from the internet and open the intended documents again. Can you reach them from the app or local folder? Are all pages loaded and legible? A filename displayed in a cloud application does not prove that the file has already been downloaded to your phone.

Also save the destination address, arrival route and important contacts as a simple note. These details do not need a ticket code, but should be quick to retrieve. Avoid a collection of nearly identical screenshots that requires you to work out which version is current while you are travelling.

Prepare the phone for the day by charging it, carrying a suitable cable if needed and limiting unnecessary use. Do not depend on every seat having an available working socket. Where an official printout is accepted and useful for you, it may provide another option. Its validity still depends on the particular ticket format, rather than on the fact that it reproduces something visible on a screen.

Live information remains a separate task

Offline documents cannot contain later platform alterations or delays. Check current displays before departure and at important transitions. Use the saved overview to orientate yourself, not as evidence that the timetable has remained unchanged since the file was downloaded.

When travelling together, consider who could retrieve essential information if one phone runs out of charge or is lost. Share only what is needed and respect the conditions of personalised tickets. A second device containing the accommodation address can already help. Keep identity documents and sensitive access details out of an unprotected general group note. The aim is accessible preparation without distributing more personal information than the situation requires.
