Separating seat reservations from train tickets

A ticket establishes your permission to travel. A reservation allocates a particular place. Both need to match the journey you intend to make.

Check two distinct services

After booking, open both the travel ticket and the seat confirmation. Check the date, train number, route and class. On a journey involving several trains, one leg may be reserved while the next is not. A seat number appearing somewhere in your documents does not establish that you have allocated places throughout the trip.

Depending on the train and product, reservations may be compulsory, optional or unavailable. Do not apply your experience on one German long-distance service to every international train. Check the operator's requirements or the booking information. On an overnight service, the accommodation category is especially important and should be settled before you arrive expecting to find somewhere suitable to sleep.

Recheck reservations after changing tickets

DB explains that a separately created seat reservation does not automatically follow alterations to the travel ticket. When changing trains, review both bookings. An old seat number may remain visible even though it belongs to a service you no longer plan to use. Keep the replacement confirmation distinct from the superseded document.

Also distinguish a change you request from an operational alteration. A different train set may have a different seating layout. Review current information before departure and retain the original confirmation. Ask if a replacement allocation is unclear rather than assuming that the previous carriage diagram still describes the vehicle you will board.

For several travellers, put the allocated seats into a small list. Are they in the same carriage, around a table or in successive rows? Booking together does not automatically create the arrangement you wanted. If sitting together is essential, resolve the question while alternative places or departures are still possible.

Keep the useful details accessible

Save the carriage and seat numbers somewhere easy to retrieve on the platform. The ticket must still be available in a format accepted by the provider. A personal note of your seat number replaces neither permission to travel nor any required reservation confirmation. This distinction matters particularly when you are switching between several booking apps.

Compare the day's carriage formation with your reservation and wait in an appropriate part of the platform where possible. This reduces movement through a crowded train. If the reserved place is not available as expected, speak to staff and retain a record for a later enquiry. Whether reimbursement is possible, and how to request it, depends on the particular product and applicable conditions rather than the mere presence of a reservation number.
