Place storage within the day's route
Compare your accommodation, departure station and planned activities first. Free storage at a hotel may be inconvenient if collection requires crossing the city again. A station locker can work better when your route naturally ends there. Count both depositing and collecting the bags as separate journeys, rather than treating storage as an instant stop.
Use the official station page or information from the actual provider. A general map marker confirms neither available lockers nor suitable opening hours. Check the precise location within the building and whether it is before or beyond any access control. When collecting against a deadline, those details matter more than a short map distance.
Check dimensions and conditions beforehand
Compare published locker dimensions with your luggage, including wheels and handles. A loosely packed backpack behaves differently from a rigid suitcase. If several bags must fit together, measure the combination. Prepare an alternative when the fit looks marginal rather than relying on repacking beside the machine while other travellers wait.
Read the terms covering duration, charging and access. Can you open the locker during the rental, or does opening end the session? Is charging based on each started period? Which payment methods work? These answers vary between installations and providers. Do not carry assumptions from a previous visit to a different station.
Keep the collection receipt, key or digital access separate from the stored luggage. Remove documents, valuables and everything needed for the remaining day first. If opening requires a phone, keep it usable until collection. A reservation or payment is useful only when you can also retrieve the access information associated with it.
Allow for unavailable storage
An installed locker bank does not guarantee an appropriately sized space when you arrive. Consider whether the accommodation could serve as a fallback or another provider lies along your route. Check that alternative in advance if the whole day depends on leaving your bags somewhere. A museum is not automatically able or willing to accept a large suitcase.
Set a latest collection time that still allows a comfortable route to the platform. A queue, forgotten code or misremembered floor becomes particularly awkward just before departure. After opening, check both the locker and your belongings thoroughly. Only then continue to the train, retaining any receipts still relevant to the storage transaction.
