Checking bicycle carriage before booking a train

Your passenger ticket does not settle whether your bicycle can travel. Check space, bicycle type and interchanges before fixing the journey.

Find an answer for every train

List every segment and check bicycle carriage with the relevant operator. A bicycle symbol in a search result should not be your only evidence. Read whether an additional ticket, reserved space or time restrictions apply. International journeys may involve several sets of conditions, even when the passenger itinerary appears straightforward.

For suitable long-distance trains, DB requires a bicycle ticket and a bicycle-space reservation. Regional services use different products and may have local rules. Permission on the first segment therefore does not establish permission on the next. Check the complete connection, including any replacement transport that could change how the bicycle is carried.

Describe the bicycle you actually have

An ordinary bicycle, tandem, cargo bike and folded bicycle are not automatically treated as the same category. Check the information for your model, dimensions and particular features. With an e-bike, preparation also includes complying with the applicable instructions for handling its battery. Do not assume an exception based only on a broad product name.

Ask if the storage arrangement or loading process might be difficult for you. Some arrangements require lifting the bicycle or removing panniers. Test whether you can control the loaded bike before travelling. Organise luggage so that necessary steps are not improvised during a short station stop while other passengers are trying to board.

Include changes and alternatives

Inspect the route between platforms with a bicycle in mind. A lift may require a detour or a wait, while narrow stairs may be unsuitable with a heavy bike. Choose a connection whose interchange matches what you can manage. The shortest total travel time should not remain the only criterion in the search.

On an alternative departure, an available passenger place does not imply an available bicycle space. If the route changes, confirm carriage again. Keep bicycle and passenger confirmations together so their validity can be compared quickly. During disruption, ask about suitable alternatives before moving to another train on the assumption that the bike can accompany you.

Before departure, check carriage formation and the intended boarding area. Secure loose parts that could catch while loading, and keep the relevant documents accessible. A prepared sequence helps you and other travellers, but it is not a guarantee of spare capacity or a particular vehicle layout. Continue to follow current operator instructions when the actual service differs from your expectation.
