Zurich: lakeside walks, old town and where to stay

Zurich's old town, Limmat and lake meet close together. Accommodation and daily planning depend on whether you want that central connection or a longer stay beside the lake.

The old town occupies both Limmat banks

Central District 1 contains the historical old town on both sides of the Limmat and the area beside the lower lake basin. An accommodation described as central may therefore lie on different sides of your intended route. Check the actual address rather than relying only on a neighbourhood label.

For a first walk, use one bank outward and the other on the return. Mark the bridges you intend to cross. This avoids repeatedly changing sides whenever another interesting place appears on your phone. A church or museum should receive its own interval rather than becoming a supposedly brief stop between every crossing.

Move from river to lake

The area between Bürkliplatz and Bellevue connects the central city with the lake. A short walk here may be sufficient after substantial time in the old town. For more waterfront, reserve another half-day and choose an endpoint that is easy to leave.

A loop through Schanzengraben offers another option. The canal provides a different water setting from the broad lakefront. Choose it if comparing canal, river and lake interests you. There is no need to assemble every bank into the longest possible route.

Rain or strong wind may justify shortening the lakeside section. A view of the water is not diminished by following it with an indoor visit. Equally, a clear morning can justify going to the shore first and moving a flexible old-town section later.

Measure the base by daily journeys

On a short stay, proximity to the main station simplifies arrival and departure. A lakeside position may suit several activities beginning there. Compare the complete journey in each case, including luggage and possible changes. The more attractive map position is not automatically the more convenient base.

Separate room costs, meals and planned admissions in your budget. A higher-priced room may offer welcome short journeys, but is not automatically cheaper overall. Count only benefits you will actually use rather than supposed savings from unused offers.

If a boat trip is planned, check the landing and return carefully. Not every lake service brings you back to the starting point. The waterfront can form a complete experience without a cruise; choose one because it interests you, not merely because the lake appears in every city photograph.
