Make the Residence a defined cultural block
If you want to see the Residence interiors, begin with current visiting arrangements. Tour times, accessible rooms and admission may influence the day more than walking distances between attractions. Leave some space before and after the visit rather than surrounding it with other reservations.
The Court Garden is a separate addition. After an interior, it can provide outdoor time and another perspective on the complex. It should not, however, squeeze the subsequent fortress journey into an unrealistically small remainder of the afternoon.
The Main is a connection, not just scenery
Walk through the centre towards the Old Main Bridge. The river helps explain the position of the town and the hills opposite. Keep the bridge usable when stopping for photographs. Spending time at a lively crossing and choosing a quiet riverside path are different options; select whichever currently suits your group.
The fortress can already be appreciated from the water. This is a worthwhile exterior perspective, not simply an incomplete version of climbing up. Travellers with limited walking time or energy can combine the Residence and Main and save the higher ground for another trip.
Count the ascent and visit together
Marienberg requires time for the uphill journey, the fortress area and the return. Check currently open sections, since renovation can affect individual approaches. Transport uphill also does not automatically remove every walk within the complex.
Before setting off, decide whether the view or a particular interior is your objective. That decision makes it easier to limit the route appropriately. Further hillside paths or another viewpoint should be added only when time remains, not simply because they appear on the same map.
With two days, separate the programme: Residence and centre on one day, fortress and river on the other. Both sides of the Main then retain room for meals and unplanned pauses. In changeable weather, the interior can remain the more stable appointment while the elevated section moves to a more suitable interval.
For the final evening, choose somewhere you can reach without another major change in elevation. After a day between Residence and fortress, a short walk to dinner may be more enjoyable than another panoramic outing. These changes of pace help the city make an impression without requiring the maximum possible number of climbs.
