Prague: planning for hills and river crossings

Prague's river crossings and elevation changes matter more to a relaxed itinerary than the number of sights. Avoid switching between the castle side and old town every hour.

View of the Vltava and bridges in Prague

Give the castle side a half-day of its own

Hradčany and Prague Castle stand above the Lesser Town. Decide whether you want exterior views, selected interiors or a broader visiting programme. Check current admission arrangements for that choice. A large complex can occupy a substantial part of the day even without a long journey to reach it.

The approach involves gradient as well as distance. Choose a connection suited to your stamina and include the later descent. Transport may ease the elevation change, but does not remove every walk within the visiting area. Particular mobility requirements need specific information about the places you intend to see.

After the upper area, the Lesser Town introduces a different scale. Allow time for streets and squares instead of immediately hurrying across the next bridge to another appointment. A meal on the same riverbank can hold the day together more calmly.

Cross the Vltava at selected points

Charles Bridge is both an important connection and a heavily visited place to linger. Allow time to look during the crossing, but do not expect an empty photograph. Stop where others can still pass. Another bridge may make sense on the return when it leads towards your destination.

In the old town, select a smaller area of squares and neighbouring streets. Choose any further interior according to genuine interest. Feeling that you should tick something off on this bank is not a strong reason for another major programme after a long castle visit.

In rain or on tired legs, a river view from a suitable bank position may be enough. A full circuit with several crossings is not automatically better than a simple route with a clear return. Keep an appropriate public transport connection available if the group wants to shorten the walk.

Leave an evening without another major transfer

Choose dinner within reasonable reach of the final daytime area or accommodation. A cheaper table across the city may create effort that is not visible in the menu price. Compare location and return journey alongside the food offer.

Across two days, separate the castle side and old town with different priorities. On the final morning, a short familiar route is more useful than another climb. Prague remains varied; you simply avoid turning its bridges mainly into repeatedly necessary transfer routes instead of places worth appreciating in their own right.
