Read the old town as connected spaces
Begin at Prešeren Square and look at the connection across Triple Bridge to the opposite bank. This crossing already explains why the river is more useful for orientation than a long list of separate addresses. Remember one bridge as a reference point that you can find again without an elaborate detour later.
On the old-town side, Mestni trg, Stari trg and Gornji trg lead through a sequence of streets and squares at the foot of the castle hill. Do not treat this area merely as the approach to the castle. The town hall, façades, fountain and shapes of the squares provide material for a satisfying walk without additional admission tickets.
A side street can change your impression more than another distant photographic stop. Keep the first circuit open to these small decisions. Travellers who draw or take photographs can spend longer in one square and shorten a later walk. The city's compact scale makes adjustments easier, but it does not replace the time needed to observe.
Choose what you want from the castle
The castle stands above the old town. Its apparent proximity on a map therefore says little about the effort of reaching it on foot. Consider your energy, the weather and the rest of the day's plans before choosing the climb or checking another available way to reach the hill.
Consult the castle directly about accessible areas and current admission options. A visit focused on exhibitions requires a different amount of time from one centred on views over the city. Choose the purpose first and the appropriate offer afterwards; the largest package is unnecessary if its contents do not match what you want to see.
During a weekend, the castle block can be paired with an unhurried old-town section. Avoid placing a tightly timed commitment on the other side of the city immediately afterwards. Even where horizontal distances are short, the descent, finding your bearings and taking a break need space, particularly when a group walks at different speeds.
Change the view from the opposite bank
The riverside routes offer another perspective on streets already explored. A section around Breg or along the Petkovšek embankment can complement the first circuit. Use one bridge to cross and another to return later, rather than automatically retracing the same route simply because it has become familiar.
On the second day, one cultural visit can provide a focus while the rest of the morning stays open. A weekend does not immediately need an excursion far beyond Ljubljana. Choosing to spend time in the city itself leaves room for a market area, a longer meal or the street that caught your attention the previous afternoon.
