Let the cathedral guide the start, not every minute
The cathedral stands in the middle of the old town and provides a clear reference point. Check tourist access before visiting, since services and church events can take priority. Begin with a flexible interval in the surrounding area so that a short-notice change does not disrupt the whole day.
Look at the building from outside first, then decide whether an independent interior visit or a guided tour suits you. These formats meet different needs. A tour can explain relationships; an individual visit allows more time with a particular detail. Special areas may have their own access conditions.
The journey from the main station to the old town forms an arrival section of its own. With luggage, use accommodation or storage first. You can then visit the cathedral quarter without repeatedly wondering where a suitcase is permitted or how narrow the next passage might be.
Understand the surroundings as a whole
Around the cathedral and town hall, a few steps change the viewpoint. Spend time with the squares and connections between buildings instead of immediately looking for another distant attraction. A café or meal nearby can interrupt the walk without losing its geographical coherence.
If history is your main interest, choose a relevant museum or themed tour in addition. The selection should deepen a question, such as the development of the city or its role as a centre of power. Buying another admission simply because it is nearby can instead leave both visits too short.
A smaller street loop or longer pause is enough for the second half of the day. A thermal-bath visit would be a separate activity with different preparation and booking arrangements; it does not automatically fit the spare hour before departure. Decide on it before travelling and remove another activity if necessary.
An excursion to the three-country point also involves an outward and return journey. It can be omitted when the old town is the focus. Aachen benefits from attention to its central spaces, not from touching the greatest possible number of borders on a map. Keep the final journey to the station straightforward and include luggage collection in the time allowance.
